In 1838, Bishop Jean-Baptiste Pompallier consecrated his mission to New Zealand and the South Pacific to Mary Assumed into Heaven. The Bishops of New Zealand in 1991 declared that Mary Assumed into Heaven is the patroness of New Zealand.
